Finishing Polyurethane for Outdoor Projects

workshop tips and tricks

Polyurethane is a popular choice for outdoor projects. In this article, you'll learn about different types, including Wipe-on polyurethane, Oil-based polyurethane, and naphtha-based polyurethane. Furthermore, you'll learn how a brush can be used to apply the finish to prevent drips and streaks. Be aware, however, that applying polyurethane has its disadvantages. Homeowners should consider these before deciding on the type of finish they want.

Oil-based polyurethane

Use mineral oil or alcohol to thoroughly clean the surface before applying a polyurethane coat. Wiping the surface will remove air bubbles. Generally, water-based polyurethanes require three to four coats of polyurethane to achieve a satisfactory finish. A thin coat of polyurethane can be applied to minimize bubbles. Use a clean cloth or mineral spirit to wipe the finish off.

Polyurethane is easy to wipe off

The wipe-on polyurethane finish is an option to oil-based, branded finishes. This finish is water-resistant and scuff resistant. Wiping polyurethane is a more cost-effective option because it does not require high-end spray booths and can be applied without a brush. Before applying wipe-on poly to a project, thin it using mineral spirits. Oil-based plastic can be mixed 1:1 using mineral spirits. You can also buy pre-mixed wipe on poly.

Thinning polyurethane and naphtha

Before beginning the process of dipping a brush or rag into a bucket of polyurethane, you should wear protective gear. Exposure to high levels of mineral spirits can cause skin irritation. Proper disposal is required for thinners used to thin polyurethane. When handling thinners, it is important to use gloves and long sleeves. Adding more of the substance will not accelerate the drying process.

Apply it with a brush

When applying polyurethane, two basic methods are recommended: brush on and wipe on. Brush on provides the best protection without drips or buildup. But, wiping it on can be more difficult as you don't need to use brush strokes. Brush on finishes are easy to apply and dry in between four and six hours. Wipe-on finish require more coats, however, they are a better option for stair balusters as well as other small, flat areas.

Drying time

The drying time for finishing polyurethane depends on several factors. The best time to apply the coating is during warm weather. Sand the coat and apply again if you experience this. Additionally, avoid applying the coating in very hot temperatures, since this can cause the finish to crack. Oil-based polyurethanes should be used at temperatures no higher than 70°F/21°C.

FAQ

How much money do you need to get going?

Because every project is unique, there aren't exact numbers. But if you want to get an idea of how much money you'll need, consider these factors:

  • Material costs
  • Tools and equipment
  • Time spent working on this project
  • The hourly rate
  • How much profit do you expect to earn
  • Hire help

If you're just starting out, you may decide to start small by making simple items such as boxes and picture frames. You will gain more experience and be able to tackle larger projects.

How do I get started with woodworking?

The best way to learn how to build furniture is by building furniture. You will need tools. There are bound to be mistakes. But if your persistence is consistent, you will soon master the craft.

You should first choose the project you wish to complete. You could make something as simple or complex as a box. Or you could build a whole entertainment center. Once you have chosen a project, locate a local woodworker who is skilled in this kind of work. Ask the local woodworker for help in deciding what tools and where to get them. It's possible to ask your friend if they do this type of work.

What woods can be used to make furniture?

Woods are classified based on their hardness. Softwoods are pine, cedar and cypress. Because they resist rot, softwoods can be used to make outdoor furniture. You can find hardwoods like oak, maple, mahogany, teak, and others. Because they are not weather-resistant, they are best used indoors.

How do I know what type of wood I'm dealing with?

When purchasing wood, always check the label. The label should provide information about the wood species, moisture content, and whether preservatives have been used.

How often should I get new supplies?

You will likely need to replace some tools over time. If you are using hand tools, you will need to sharpen them frequently. If you are using power tools, you will need to purchase replacement parts regularly. Avoid buying too many products at once. Spread your purchases out over several months.

How can my shop be organized?

To keep your workshop tidy and organized, you should first create a place for tools storage. You want your tools to stay clean and free from debris and dust. Hang tools and accessories using pegboard hooks.

How do I know what tools are best suited for me?

When shopping for tools, it helps to think about your needs and preferences. Do you prefer metal handles or plastic? What size screws or nails do you prefer? Are you comfortable with power tools, or would you rather use hand tools?

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will show you how to join two pieces of wood together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This method works great if your wood is straight and smooth. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. First, measure the area where you wish to place the pocket joint. Then drill 3/4 inch deep holes into the ends of each piece of wood using a jig saw or handheld drilling machine.
  2. Sand Smooth. You can sand the edges of the wood to ensure that it doesn't split.
  3. Glue both sides together. Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Secure the pieces together. After the glue has dried thoroughly, secure the pieces so that they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim any excess wood surrounding the joint once the glue has dried completely.

You should leave enough space between the pieces to allow you to turn them inside-out.
